Driven to Serve
11/1/2022
A caregiver is entrusted with one’s most vulnerable moments. They’re present for precious memories made with family and friends and are there for the hardest days too. Olivia Martin, Tulsa, believes it’s a privilege to serve others in these moments, and it’s what she loves most about her future in the health care field.
As a nursing student, Olivia works summer jobs to expand her experience in caring for others. She nannies for toddlers and is a home health aid for an elderly patient with an advanced autoimmune disease. “This will give me an opportunity to help relieve the family of caregiver burnout while also providing experience in caring for patients in an atypical health care setting,” Olivia says. “I know this will deepen my understanding of different patient perspectives and help optimize the care of my future patients.”
"When I look at the years of college I have already completed and the years to come, Kappa is the reason for all of the highs and the support that got me through the lows.”
Due to the demand of nursing school, Olivia is only able to work during the summer. She was thankful to receive a Kappa Foundation scholarship, which has made an immense impact and helped alleviate her financial burdens. “Majoring in nursing is extremely demanding of my time and energy,” she says. “Receiving this scholarship allows me to maintain high academic performance and learn as much as I can about being a nurse while eliminating financial stress.”
She shares how thankful she is for Kappa and the generous donors who make scholarships like this possible. Olivia also thanks her sisters for always being there. “My sisters have supported me in every aspect of my life, allowing me to thrive personally, academically and socially. From a big sister who sits with me patiently as I try to use my blood pressure cuff for the first time to a best friend who gives advice from her own nursing experience … When I look at the years of college I have already completed and the years to come, Kappa is the reason for all of the highs and the support that got me through the lows.”
