Mental Health & Well-being

May Is Mental Health Awareness Month

5/1/2022

Your health is your wealth. It’s true. Your health — both mental and physical — is so important. Since it’s Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re going to start from the inside out and focus on self-care.

First and foremost, self-care isn’t selfish.

We can’t say this enough. As we’re all striving toward a balanced and healthy life, there’s no way you can do it without prioritizing your mental health and, ultimately, practicing self-care. Did you know there are four dimensions of self-care: physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual? The trick is to find and focus on the dimension that helps you feel the most balanced.

Everyone’s trying to live their best life, right?

And we know, it’s easier said than done. But, that’s why it’s important to remember that self-care isn’t always the insta-worthy bath bombs or glamourous face masks you’re seeing online. Don’t get us wrong, we love those as much as the next person, but your self-care may look a little different. It may be something like sweating it out with a bit of exercise, getting your creative juices flowing by journaling, or finally getting around to folding laundry. Choose the safe and healthy option that works for you.

It’s time to share the wealth.

This is key: Don’t forget the importance of self-care — especially now during Mental Health Awareness Month and finals season.

Share the resources below with chapter members, friends and family, so you all can discover which self-care strategies work best for you.

  • Lives Fully LivedKindness series. Kindness lies deep within our sisterhood. Embrace kindness with us during this exclusive series where we’ll explore how it bolsters both our own wellness and mental health as well as those around us. Get registered.
  • Resources in Minerva. Log in to Kappa’s learning management system and explore the courses on wellness, including Good Stress vs. Bad Stress, Good Sleep Habits, and The Neuroscience of Happiness.
  • Check in with yourself. Do this often! Ask yourself what’s stressing you out? How do you feel when you check off items from your to-do list? Use this checklist for a good starting point. You can also complete the mental health screening tool. It’s another great way to mentally check in.
