Emily's Story

Emily sounds bubbly. It’s no surprise she was the recruitment chair for her chapter when she was in college. But being bubbly and upbeat has not negated the mental health challenges she’s faced after graduating. Almost a decade later and through much self-work, Emily has learned to recognize when stress and anxiety start to build tension in her body: Her shoulders feel like they’re by her ears. Her chest feels tight. For Emily, these physical manifestations may mean a more serious mental health episode is looming.

Pursuing a Life Fully Lived

At a young age, Chiara “Kiki” Giannella, Colorado, faced mental health struggles, dealt with depression and navigated the stigma around going to therapy. 

With therapy, Kiki got back on her feet and soon began to notice people around her who needed help too. It became her mission to create a safe space for those struggling so they too could focus on their mental health and well-being.

The future is female — and the future is Kappa. Women’s History Month is a great time to focus on the critical importance of gender representation. Last year, women accounted for the majority of college students in the U.S. and Canada. While the gender gap in education is shrinking, women still must join forces, fight for a seat at the table and champion gender equality. As Tade Hartsuff Kuhns, Butler, said: We must “remember it can be done, but it will take work.”
