McLamore Family Foundation Creates Scholarships with $500,000 Gift
2/8/2022
In honor of their late mother, Nancy Nichol McLamore, Cornell, the McLamore Family Foundation established a scholarship fund with a generous $500,000 gift over 10 years. The gift will create two annual $25,000 need-based scholarships for Cornell Kappas.
While at Cornell, Nancy met and married her husband, Jim McLamore, who ironically attended Cornell on a scholarship. Together, they were an unstoppable team. With Nancy’s unwavering support, Jim became a successful restaurateur, and eventually co-founded the Burger King Corporation in 1954. Nancy and Jim raised four children and pursued a life full of achievement and philanthropy.
Kappa was important to Nancy, too, and her family knew how much it meant to her. When Nancy’s children, and the McLamore Family Foundation wanted to honor Nancy, they knew that a scholarship would carry on the passion she and her late husband had for continuing education.
The Nancy Nichol McLamore Scholarship will be available to two Cornell undergraduates annually for 10 years, beginning in the 2022–23 academic year. It symbolizes Nancy’s bond to our sisterhood and her everlasting devotion to learning and education. “We are very grateful for this generous donation to create two new annual scholarships,” said Susanne Vander Heyden, Kappa Foundation President. “We appreciate the support from the McLamore Foundation to continue Nancy’s and the family’s commitment to education.”
Learning for life and the pursuit of potential is at the heart of Kappa. Our Founders were among the first generation of women to pursue higher education at a time when many colleges and universities barred women from campus. Because of their vision and trailblazing spirit and thanks to incredible opportunities like the Nancy Nichol McLamore Scholarship, Kappas are able to pursue their academic dreams while dreaming boldly and living fully.
